Post-registration procedures concerning pesticide products
Post-registration
procedures enable the validity of the forecasts to be measured,
based upon recorded data concerning efficacy, safety and effects
on health and the environment of a specified pesticide (FAO, 1988;
WHO/PAHO, 1993).
If the results of the surveillance leave any doubts as to the effectiveness
or safety of the product in use, studies can be requested or appropriate
sanctions can be imposed.
The surveillance procedures of the effects of pesticides on human
health (by means of exposure indicators and the effects on biological
samples) are intended for the benefit not only of workers exposed
to the products but also for the community in general, through testing
for pesticide residues in food and water.
In this way, development of an appropriate analytical capacity should
take into account the establishment of reference levels for the
surveillance of people exposed to pesticides, to ensure that users
are made aware of the residues and impurities in pesticides, and
to carry out quality control on the product.
Surveillance procedures involving laboratory work include those
related to quality control of pesticides (identity and concentration),
analyses of pesticide residues in foods and water and those which
involve biological monitoring.
