Registration Procedures concerning Pesticides
Registration of any pesticide involves a series of activities which
must be completed before the product is allowed to enter the market.
The procedure involves assessment and approval of scientific documents,
in order to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the product
submitted for registration.
The
purpose of this is to identify whether a given pesticide presents
any potential danger or dangers, as well as to reduce risks to
the users, to consumers of foods treated with pesticides, to wild
animals or to any other non-target organisms.
Data on the toxicity of the pesticide product is obtained by testing
on animals and through the use of other laboratory procedures.
This data enables toxicological evaluations to be made and for
classifications to be drawn up. Furthermore, it permits maximum
residue limits to be fixed in foods, and must be submitted by
the company applying for registration.
The legal requirements for the granting of authorization permits
are, within the scope of the SUS (Unified Health System), laid
down by Federal Legislation covering pesticides and similar items,
under Law 7.802/89, Decree 98.816/90, Administrative Rule 03/92,
of the former Sanitary Surveillance Secretariat, Ministry of Health,
presently ANVISA.
